Shoppers at a farmers’ market in Aspen, Colorado, got an unusual customer last Saturday: a bear that wandered between the stalls and helped itself to fresh bread and pastries. People took out their phones as it stood on its hind legs to reach the baked goods and, at one point, jumped onto a table for a better angle.

The bear appeared while vendors were still setting up, according to Joey Livingston, a spokesperson for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, who spoke to the Denver Post. A police officer took steps to scare it away from the people and the food while a wildlife officer was on the way. The bear climbed a tree and later left the area.

Bears are especially active and hungry in autumn as they bulk up for winter hibernation. This year record drought has reduced their natural food, which has pushed up the number of contacts between bears and people.
