Alligator wanders inside North Carolina bagel shop
Wildlife officers safely captured and relocated the young reptile after it surprised staff and customers by walking into a coastal food venue.

Surveillance cameras recorded an unexpected customer entering Bagel Dock Express in Southport, North Carolina, when a young alligator strolled indoors. The three-foot-long reptile traversed an open back doorway, walked directly across a storage room, and advanced toward the ordering counter where food is served.
The presence of the wandering predator startled both store workers and patrons on site. While the business owner was occupied with installing a replacement baking oven, one surprised customer grabbed a chair to defend against the approaching creature. Municipal police and local animal protective services personnel arrived shortly afterward to capture the protected animal and relocate it without injury.
Rising coastal interactions
Wildlife authorities across North Carolina noted that close contacts between residents and native alligators have grown increasingly frequent throughout coastal communities. Although this particular episode happened outside the primary mating season, state wildlife helpline staff routinely handle multiple inquiries each day as human activity overlaps with alligator territory.
District wildlife biologist John Henry Harrelson warned that supplemental feeding by people represents the main driver behind unusual behavior. While alligators generally remain timid and shy away from people, repeated handouts cause them to discard their customary caution. When these animals begin viewing human activity as a dependable source for nourishment, dangerous confrontations become far more likely.
In response to the growing number of sightings, state conservation agencies established an educational program known as GatorWise to encourage responsible coexistence. The guidance instructs community members to assume reptiles inhabit area waters, refrain from tossing food scraps or cleaning fish near shorelines, keep domestic animals secured, and maintain constant awareness near wetland environments.
