A chance encounter turned into an unexpected birding adventure for a couple visiting Slimbridge, Gloucestershire. After finding the Wetland Centre closed, they accepted an offer from a passing stranger to explore the estuary.
The man, introduced as Phil, guided them along a track toward the Severn estuary, sharing his deep knowledge of local birds. His enthusiasm grew as he pointed out curlews, long-tailed tits, shelducks, dunlins, and various geese.
Phil, a composer who also helps run a museum, brought the landscape to life with observations about the weather, ancient churches, and the fortune of their meeting. His passion for birdwatching was infectious, offering a stark contrast to competitive birding culture.
A peaceful moment in nature
As they reached the Severn seawall, the group spotted roe deer and a stunning sunset over the mudflats. The scene was alive with waders and gulls as the tide began to rise.
Phil’s excitement peaked when a marsh harrier appeared, gliding gracefully over the water. The moment was a testament to the simple joy of appreciating wildlife without competition or rivalry.
